Ode to the Tomato
Every summer I look forward to homegrown tomatoes. This year, maybe more than others, I
await the |
 |
fresh garden tomatoes with much anticipation. First, the rain we've gotten this year
has got my potted tomato plants growing like weeds. I think
they have sprung up about 8 inches in the past week and a half. Second,
the tomato salmonella scares in the news each night, and how they are pulling
tomatoes out of the supermarket shelves, has me wishing my home grown garden tomatoes
were ready now. But although they do have little yellow blossoms on them, and although
the plants are over a foot tall, I still am anxiously awaiting the first little tomato
to begin to form from the blossom. This evening I spent time on my tomato care:
grooming the plants, assuring there is air flow between the leaves, cutting off any
withered or yellowing leaves. Somehow I just know that this year will be a great year
for tomatoes!
6/23/08 Update - noticed that there are 2 tomatos started on one of my tomato plants. Have decided
to instigate a 'pruning' plan on my tomatos. This year is destined to be the year of pruning
as I've had luck pruning my petunias and now I'm hoping my pruning plan will help me to
have more tomatos and healthier tomato plants.

Basic Tomato Care |
|
Water - Water deeply, and infrequently. Do not over water but do not let the tomatos completely dry out in between plantings.
Feed - Incorporate crushed egg shells into the soil around the base of tomato plants to supply calcium
Pruning - Cut away all dead or yellowing foilage from your plants. Keep only healthy green leaves.
Pruning - Never prune wet plants
Pruning - Suckers should be removed regularly
Pruning - Trim off bottom leaves right under first flower blossom. Leave 1 foot between bottom leaf and ground to avoid pests and diseases.
Late Season Pruning - When there is one month left before the first frost, 'top' your tomato plants, removing the top to allow all set fruit energy to finish out production.
