Avoiding Mosquitos

Being that I work 5 days a week, alot of my gardening time is in the evenings. I get home around 5 PM and I try to get out in the garden as soon as I can until dark. This poses a problem, since mosquitoes are nocturnal. I am in the garden at their prime feeding time. Yesterday, I was out in the garden at 9 AM and it was pleasant. I guess during the day, mosquitoes find a cool place to sleep and unless you interrupt them, they are not feeding. I think the day was pretty well clear of mosquitoes until about 3 PM when I noticed they were starting to buzz around.
We do have a mosquito magnet going and hundreds of mosquitoes have been caught in it. I use the coils when we sit on the deck and that pretty much keeps us clear but if you walk in the garden in the evening they are sure to find you.

Mosquito Control
  • Wear light colors instead of dark colors
  • The following are natural predators of mosquitos : birds, bats, dragonflies and frogs

  • Change water in wading pools at least once a week

  • Stock ponds with minnows who feed on mosquitos

  • Keep weeds cut back and grass cut short to eliminate shelter for mosquitos
